If you’d like to protect information on your Facebook account with the highest possible privacy settings (allowing only your friends and some advertisers to see), do the following:

From your Home or Wall page in Facebook, select the “Account” tab at the top right and then click on “Privacy Settings.”
Click “Friends only”
Click “Apply these settings.”
On the same page, near the bottom left, select “Applications and Websites”
You can delete any unwanted applications. Then, next to “Games and Application Activity,” select “Friends only”
One the same page, at “Info accessible through your friends,” select “Edit settings.” Uncheck all of the boxes and click on “Save changes.”
One the same page, at “Instant Personalization,” select “Edit settings” and uncheck the box at the bottom of the page. Click “Confirm.” Then select “Back to applications.”
At the “Public Search” option, select “Edit settings” and uncheck the box entitled “Enable public search.” Click “Confirm.”
Click on the “Home” tab at top right to go back to your Facebook page.

You can modify any of the above settings to keep things less private by choosing “Friends of Friends” or “Everyone” (meaning anyone on the Internet). But remember, keeping private information private is always a good idea
